Summer is the perfect time of the year for cleaning your closet and renewing your wardrobe. Whether you are on vacation or not, follow these 5 simple tips for beginning to create the wardrobe of your dreams:
1. Have your basics
A great wardrobe is always based on a few key items that can be paired with any new trends that rule the runway. Each girl has her own basics, depending on her style and body type. For me, a couple of plain t-shirts, a pair of black jeans, a nice day-to-night dress, comfortable shoes and a rocking black leather jacket are a definite must!
Tip: Pick your basics in neutral colors, such as white, beige, gray and black, for an easy mix & match!
2. Get rid of what you don’t need
Every morning, you walk into a closet full of clothes but you feel like you have nothing to wear, sounds familiar? This happens to almost every woman because we tend to accumulate things that we don’t need or even like and, between piles and piles of unwanted clothes, our favorite items lay hidden.
I have adopted the habit of cleaning my closet at least once a year. It might be difficult to throw things away, maybe because they were a gift from someone special or evoke a certain memory but I can assure you that, in the end, you will feel good and relieved by letting go of what you don’t need.
Tip: Hang all of your clothes with the hangers in one direction and, whenever you wear a piece of clothing, put it back with the hanger turned the opposite way. By the end of the year you’ll know exactly what you wore and what you didn’t. Whatever you didn’t use in a year, you don’t need!
3. Make your own clothes
A great way of following all of the latest trends without compromising your budget is to make your own clothes or renew the ones you already have. It is also a good way to ensure that every item matches your preferences and fits perfectly to your body. You can ask for help to any sewing experts among your family and friends, follow one of the several DIY tutorials on the Internet or dare to experiment by yourself. The only limit is your creativity!
Tip: Buy your fabrics at a local store or browse the Internet for endless options. I recommend Tissura for fabric online shopping, they have everything from velvet and lace, to cotton and silk, plus they ship worldwide! One of my current favorites is velvet, see my top pick here or look at Tissura's velvet selection.
4. Invest in unique items
Once in a while, it is good to invest in a unique item that will upgrade your outfits and last for a lifetime. Be sure to pick something timeless and sophisticated, something that you truly fell in love with as soon as you saw it on the shelf. I really love to invest in designer bags, sunglasses and a nice jacket or coat. Shoes are also a great investment, but it is harder to take good care of them.
Tip: Do a good research before buying your investment pieces, as they will usually be considerably more expensive. I love checking out websites like Net-a-Porter and Moda Operandi to explore all of the best options in their curated selections.
5. Stay true to your style
When shopping, it is really easy to get carried away and end up buying something that doesn’t really represent your style. Always keep in mind the colors and the shapes that suit you so that you end up buying items that you will actually wear (and no, wearing it once doesn’t count!). Remember, if you have doubts in the store’s fitting room, you will most likely have doubts at home too!
Tip: Go with a stylist to learn about the colors that go best with your skin type and the shapes that enhance your body. Together, make a small guide that includes all of that information and that you can take with you whenever you go shopping as a reminder of your ideal style.
